Induction and introductory training

Local authorities run induction programmes for teaching assistants and introductory programmes for support staff.

Introductory training for teaching assistants

The teaching assistant (TA) introductory training is designed to inform TAs of the context in which they’ll be working and how they’ll support teachers.

The primary TA programme includes modules in literacy, mathematics, behaviour management, role and context, inclusion and special needs, understanding how children learn, ICT in teaching and learning and English as an additional language.

The secondary TA programme includes modules in role and context, literacy, mathematics, behaviour management and inclusion, English as an additional language and science.

Introductory training for other support staff

The support staff introductory training materials are not role specific and provides support staff with fundamental information about matters that are relevant to all who work in schools.

The programme training consists of modules in role and context, behaviour management, inclusion and ICT.

Programme materials are available to download. For more information on these programmes please speak to your line manager.

Induction to the workplace

If you are a line manager or someone responsible for inducting a support staff member then our pages on induction and introductory training for school leaders may help you plan an induction programme. The information may also be of interest to anyone starting a school based role in the near future.
