Careers related subject resources

The TDA commissioned a series of pilot resources to introduce a careers dimension into subject delivery. These practical careers related activities link with elements of the English, history and modern languages curricula.
Teachers can draw on these resources to highlight a careers dimension within subject delivery. The resources have initially focused on English, history and modern language subjects.

Engaging learners in career-related activities within subject delivery will encourage learners to explore potential career paths and raise awareness of issues such as gendered occupational stereotypes.

English

English careers resources will provide classroom activities to assist key stage three and four learners in:
  • exploring definitions of work and career
  • selecting and presenting personal information
  • experiencing formal interview requirements
  • using class texts and the media to explore and research careers
  • recognising stereotypes and attitudes to careers portrayed in the media.

History

These resources demonstrate how history can provide the skills and knowledge to benefit students in a number of career opportunities. They indicate how the skills and knowledge developed by studying the history curriculum can be transferred to other professions, such as law and journalism. There are also materials for key stage 3 students to undertake independent projects and research.

Modern Languages – French, German and Spanish

These resources provide lesson plans for years 7 to 11 in Spanish, French and German. Learners are introduced to the world of work through familiar brands and logo’s. Activities also demonstrate a wide range of jobs requiring language skills by using practical examples such as job advertisements and curriculum vitaes.
